Lucie Rice for San Francisco Business Times

Artist Lucie Rice created three unique images to be featured on advertisements for the San Francisco Business Times.  The illustrations are intended as a three-part series on “What People Earn” across the US– depicting iconography of jets and wine glasses suggestive of the Bourgeois juxtaposed against construction workers and gardeners which of course nods to the working class.  The images, in Rice’s style, have an air of whimsy and dreaminess to them, which creates an intriguing perspective on the class and social implications this her imagery provokes.  Along with the work’s pleasing aesthetic and Rice’s evidently fine craft, this imagery also investigates San Francisco’s changing socio-economic climate by pointing towards things like craft beer and yoga.  This work is is not only intricate and artistically thoughtful, but also presents an important foreshadowing that accompanies the phrases “What People Earn,” “Where the Money Lives,” and “How Far Your Money Goes.”
